Preparing the Kids for College

Updated: Oct 23, 2020

So you're getting your kids ready for college...Is your college binder all set? Have you made a list of schools to visit? Have you given any consideration to your college essay prompts?? Well...?

On tour at the University of South Carolina

University of South Carolina is set in a small city. This public university is big...we're talking over 30,000 students. The grounds are really nice, but I didn't love that the stadium is over 2+ miles away. It seemed that far anyway. For some, that doesn't matter. I just like having the comfort of my stadium being right on campus. The Gamecocks and Tigers are big rivals...go Tigers!

On tour at James Madison University

I have to admit...going to visit colleges is one of my all-time favorite things to do. It might sound crazy, but I enjoy seeing different places, and colleges are filled with history and beautiful architecture, especially schools in the South. Visiting schools has never been stressful but more of an adventure into the great unknown, lol.

“War ... should only be declared by the authority of the people, whose toils and treasures are to support its burdens, instead of the government which is to reap its fruits." - James Madison

James Madison University, named in honor of our 4th United States president, is a beautiful public university and campus. It was a top choice for our younger daughter. It didn't end up being 'the' school..but it should be on your radar if your student is a well-rounded, solid B+ student or better with an SAT in the range of 1200. Like most schools, they are getting more competitive and harder to get into. Their in state tuition is sweet and out of state is not as painful as schools in the North. They have a new football stadium and the historic downtown is a fun stopping ground. Greek life is a plus here. #JamesMadison #Beautifulcampus

On tour at University of Rhode Island

University of Rhode Island

What's not to like?? I really pushed for URI because it is beautiful. After touring the school, area beaches, and downtown Newport, I felt this was a place my daughter would really like. We got a nice merit package, which made walking away difficult..but her heart belongs to UMass Amherst. Anyway, There are sooo many positives about URI. The school grounds are really beautiful, and if you are a marine biology or pharmaceutical major, this is one school you should not miss touring. The vice president of the CVS chain is an alumnus here and has shown the school a lot of love. Also, if school spirit is important to you, their basketball team, the Rhode Island Rams, are NCAA Division 1 and usually go the distance. (#college #URI #marinebiology #beaches #Newport #Mansions). I'll be pushing URI on my youngest son!

Dorm life at URI

In the back of The Breakers, Newport

We made a day (a long day) of our URI tour and took in the atmosphere of the entire area. Visiting at least one of the mansions is a MUST and The Breakers, in particular, is simply AMAZING. Rich in American history, with beautiful architecture and scenery, the Breakers is well worth the money. #TheBreakers #URI #Ocean #Collegetour #RhodeIsland #Mustsee #makingmemories #goodtimes
